As one of the fastest growing things on the planet Kelp scrubs CO2 around 20x faster than the same biomass of trees.
When we harvest we leave the base so that the Kelp can keep on growing and scrubbing.
Shellfish build their shells from Calcium Carbonate, using Marine CO2. That's the same atmospheric waste CO2 that humanity is over-generating dissolved in seawater .
This CO2 is locked in long term by mollusc shells.
Every acre of polyculture regenerative Sea Farm will remove around 40 tonnes of marine CO2 through natural means as the seaweed and shellfish grow and the shellfish use it to develop their shells.
Some is stored short-term and realeased over 1-10 years once eaten by us, and the mollusc shells sequester it long-term.
Around 30% of CO2 emissions are absorbed by our seas & oceans, increasing the acidity. This affects all marine life and is happening too fast for life to adapt.
By removing CO2 we make the ocean more survivable for it's inhabitants, both plant & animal, and so the Earth more survivable for us humans, who depend on those systems.
Every sea farm creates an oasis habitat within the environment - like a woodland among fields. This gives marine life large and small refuge and encourages breeding and living in that area.
What's more the seawater there will be the cleanest for miles.
Because we are farming native species in the open sea both seaweed and shellfish will set spore and the local currents will take that to seed new populations, and in the case of Kelp, new habitats along the coast, which will seed more again.
Established sea farms consistently report increased stocks of fish nearby after just a couple of years.
With livestock farming being a major driver of both planetary heating and deforestation we aim to have our planet positive shellfish protein that actually removes CO2 replace it in our diets.
Every plate of Methane generating beef or lamb or pork that we replace avoids significant emissions. Especially when that meat is from abroad.
All of our produce is rich in the vitamins and nutrients of the sea it is grown in. and are all low in both fat and carbohydrates. All are delicious!
Our Kelp is excellent for you thyroid due to high iodine that is hard to find outside of seafood., while Mussels and Scallops are both good for blood pressure and heart.
As a keen diver one of the greatest benefits of Sea Farms for me is that they use the excess phosphates and nitrates that farming puts into the seas via rivers to grow bigger faster.
These pollutants are known to create the 'marine dead zones' at river mouths that have long decimated our coastal habitats.
With so much to gain and so much at stake we are passionate about building a case for quickly growing the number of individually owned sea farms around the UK and the world and will explore all opportunities to do so. The basis for that will be proving the many benefits, some of which we have noted above.
Please do get in touch if you'd like to help spread the word, or are thinking of taking the plunge yourself!
We are very open to working with researchers and opening up our operation to you if our objectives align, so do get in touch to discuss if there is an opportunity to collaborate.
