Welcome to TideGrown: Regenerative Sea Farms

Food for Thought

Farming in the Sea?

Sea Farms are low-tech, high-impact, growing more calories per acre than any form of land farming. Because the sea provides all the nutrients and water needed they are also zero-input, reducing labour, costs and carbon emissions greatly.

As compared to land farms they also carry significantly lower failure risks as they will never face crop failure through drought, water or fertiliser shortages or of course flood or wildfire.

Nature Positive

Both seaweed and shellfish filter out many of the marine poisons we dump into the sea via rivers: fertiliser runoff, livestock runoff and greenhouse gasses. In fact they all help them to grow faster, bigger and tastier!

As a result sea farms clean up marine dead zones and reduce ocean acidification: read up on our Benefits page.

Climate Positive

Our polyculture sea farms will remove around 40 tonnes of CO2e per acre per year, making them one of the few climate fixing foods you can find. They also avoid the greenhouse gas emissions of the climate damaging foods they replace.

When you eat some of our shellfish instead of Brazilian Beef reared on land recently cleared from the Amazon rainforest this differential is huge, though all land agriculture in the UK as elsewhere comes at a high Climate cost per calorie.

About TideGrown Sea Farms

Polyculture, regenerative Sea Farming in Dorset

We will grow Sugar Kelp, Scallops and Blue Mussels for local markets, while partnering with scientists to prove that regenerative Sea Farms are a clear way for coastal communities to produce first-class food that actually removes Carbon Dioxide and other pollutants from the sea, healing our coastal waters and tackling climate change.

And all you will see from the shore is our buoys =)

Climate Fixing, Sustainable Food

Worldwide over 20% of greenhouse gas emissions are from our food system, with domestic food production in the UK responsible for 10% of emissions and the 50%+ of our calories that we import much more on top.

Sea Farms are one of the few approaches addressing this key challenge for humanity: all sea farmed food reduces global warming and restores the natural environment, hence "planet positive". In doing so we also free up space on land for rewilding.

Our Mission

Tidegrown aims to prove that this type of Sea Farm has a huge role to play in humanity's future by measuring the many beneficial impacts it has on climate and nature, alongside any negatives. To do this we will partner with a local University and work with recognised scientists.

We hope soon people can use our data & experience to setup impactful, profitable sea farms of their own so together we can become a meaningful climate solution.

Why Not Farm Fish?

Farmed fish are calorie dense, but are neither climate fixing nor sustainable due to the energy needed to produce the feed and medicines required, esp. for predatory fish such as Salmon. It also constrains animals that roam to find enough to eat to a small which is detrimental to health and of course welfare.

Many consider our shellfish to be Vegan as these non sentient sea-filtration powerhouses have no brains (and we make sure they have a good life!)

So Many Benefits

As the many articles written about the surge in Sea Farming in the US, Canada and France will attest there are a lot of reasons to do it and even more to support it.  From diet, to Nature with Climate and Planet at the core.

Take a Deeper Dive

The food produced is nutritionally excellent and plentiful: we will grow Kelp, Scallops and Mussels,

How a "3D" "IMTA" or "Vertical" Sea Farm Works

By growing from a suspended line we minimise disturbance to the sea floor habitat & maximise space use

  • The Kelp, Mussels and Scallops will grow down from the line in the water column, benefitting each other in a marine polyculture
  • These are secured in place by a few strong anchors, so the farm stays where you left it during storms
  • On the surface all you will see are a few lines of buoys, which boats can safely cross, and sometimes happy sea farmers

Massive thanks to www.GreenWave.org for the inspiration and practical guidance on Sea Farming
